Trademark Usage Guidelines

Last Updated: February 27, 2023

Below is a non-exhaustive list of the trademarks, logos, and brands of Circle Internet Services, Inc. dba CircleCI (hereafter “CircleCI,” “we,” “us,” or “our”). To protect our valuable intellectual property rights in these trademarks, logos, and brands, we must ensure that they are used properly by an individual person or an entity, as applicable (collectively, “you,” “your”). While we try to keep the below list of our trademarks, logos, and brands current, the absence of a name or logo from the list below does not constitute a waiver of CircleCI’s trademark or other intellectual property rights in that name or logo. Please be sure you review this section in these Guidelines from time to time because this list of trademarks, names, and logos (and their status) could change.

You may reference CircleCI’s products and services using our trademarks, as long as those references are: (1) truthful, fair, and not misleading, and (2) comply with these Guidelines. Our trademarks, brands, icons, and logos should never be used in a way that could cause anyone to wrongly believe that your products or services are offered, endorsed, or sponsored by us or any of our subsidiaries. It is your responsibility to review these Guidelines periodically because they may be updated from time to time at our sole discretion.

These Guidelines apply to all CircleCI employees, customers, partners, licensees, outside vendors, and other third parties. If you are a licensee of a CircleCI trademark or logo and your license agreement has particular usage guidelines different than those provided here, please follow the specific guidelines in your agreement. If you are a licensee but have not been provided with special guidelines governing the usage of our trademarks and/or logos, these Guidelines apply to your usage of those materials.

Specific Do’s and Don’ts

Style of Use

When using CircleCI’s trademarks: (i) use our logos and icons exactly as they appear here, and do not alter or distort their appearance in any way, for example, by adding your own design elements or changing the font, colors, or size; (ii) allow for clear space around our logos and icons; and (iii) maintain the legibility of our logos and icons and keep them sharp, clear, and well-produced. When using our word marks, you may not change their appearance by abbreviating them, incorporating them into acronyms, changing their spelling, using them in parts, or using improper capitalization.

Trademark Notices

Designate both (1) CircleCI’s ownership of, and (2) the proper status of a particular CircleCI trademark by using the correct trademark symbol (® or ™) as set forth below. Acknowledgement of CircleCI’s ownership of the trademark should also be included in the following format: “      is a trademark or registered trademark of Circle Internet Services, Inc.”

  • In letters, memos, press releases, white papers, advertising, slides, foils, video, and other multimedia presentations:
    • Properly designate (with ® or ™) all of CircleCI’s trademarks at the most prominent use (usually a headline) and again on the first occurrence in copy; and
    • In the case of presentation graphics, trademarks should be designated with the proper trademark symbol on each page, slide, and foil.
  • In newsletters, magazines, and publications containing multiple articles:
    • Properly designate (with ® or ™) all of CircleCI’s trademarks on the first occurrence in the document, in headlines and on the first occurrence in every article in which they are used.
  • In brochures, annual/quarterly reports, books, technical documentation, and other bound documents:
    • Properly designate (with ® or ™) all of CircleCI’s trademarks on the first occurrence in the document, in headlines, and on the first occurrence in text.
  • In all charts or graphs, properly designate trademarks (with ® or ™).
  • On all packaging, always use the trademark symbol in every reference.

CircleCI Icon and Logo Use

Do not make unlicensed use of our icons and logos, including the CircleCI logos shown above. Use of our icons and logos by you or any third party requires either a license or our written permission. To obtain permission to use one of our trademarks, icons, or logos, please contact us to discuss your proposed use.

Logo and Name Use for Community Built Tools

If you have created a tool that connects with or is compatible with CircleCI’s products, you may use either of the above CircleCI Community Built logos to distinguish your tool from CircleCI’s products and services. If you choose to use the CircleCI Community Built logos, please use the versions available here and in a manner that conforms with these Guidelines.

If you use CircleCI’s name in your Community Built tool, please do so in a way that distinguishes your tool from our products and services. For example, if you created an extension for CircleCI’s products and services, you may name the extension “[Member’s] extension for CircleCI”, where the leading part of the name is your own name or distinct brand, while CircleCI’s name is only being used for descriptive purposes. This makes it clear that the extension was your creation and not provided, created, endorsed, supported or maintained by CircleCI.

Trademarks are Singular Adjectives, Not Verbs and Should Not be Made Possessive

Use the CircleCI trademarks only as adjectives followed by the appropriate generic product or service noun describing the relevant product or service (e.g., “the CircleCI® service makes our developers more efficient”). CircleCI’s trademarks should not be used as verbs or in the plural or possessive form.

References to Our Corporate Entity

The rules for proper usage of our trademarks change slightly when CircleCI is used to refer to our company instead of a service or brand of product. Company names, unlike trademarks, are proper nouns that (1) do not need to be followed by a generic term, and (2) can be used in the possessive form. For that reason, the ® symbol does not need to follow references to CircleCI as a company. The following examples illustrate proper and improper usage:

Correct: CircleCI is headquartered in San Francisco.

Incorrect: CircleCI® is headquartered in San Francisco.

CircleCI Suppliers and Vendors

If you are a vendor or supplier of CircleCI, please follow the specific trademark usage guidelines, if any, contained in your agreement with us. Vendors and suppliers interested in using our trademarks, logos, and/or brands must get explicit, written approval. Please contact your CircleCI representative to get additional information about the approval process.

No Ownership Claim

Do not seek a trademark or domain name registration for any term that includes a CircleCI trademark or brand, or otherwise assert rights over any CircleCI trademark or brand by incorporating it into your own product or service names, trademarks, logos, company names, or domain names.

No Bidding on Our Trademarks

You shall not bid on CircleCI’s trademarks or brands (or any variant or extension thereof) as a keyword on any search engine unless you have express permission to do so in a written agreement with us.

No Tarnishment

You shall not use a CircleCI trademark in a derogatory or degrading way.

Please contact us if you become aware of any usage of our trademarks, brands, or logos in violation of these Guidelines.
