The Challenge Prior to CircleCI
Before CircleCI, Dollar Shave Club engineers ran test suites on local machines, and attempted many times to get them running on Jenkins. Because they had to manage so many environments on the Jenkins box, it required a significant amount of both time and effort. Engineers ran single spec files for the features they were working on instead of whole test suite before committing code - which meant that committing one buggy feature could break the entire suite.
The Solution
Dollar Shave Club chose CircleCI for both iOS and web to build reliable software and a positive user experience. CircleCI offers support for running Docker within build containers, seamlessly integrating with Dollar Shave Club’s test environment, which ensured that set-up was quick and simple. Once DSC started running CircleCI, as soon as their engineers commit code, the entire test suite runs and provides immediate feedback. This translates to increased confidence levels of the test suite, knowing that if it breaks, the team can go in and investigate.
